Lisbon‑Mt. Vernon Ambulance Service (LMVAS) is a community-driven, nonprofit EMS agency serving over 150 sq miles—including Lisbon, Mt. Vernon, Cornell College, and surrounding rural areas—with a population of around 8,000+ people. Since July 1974, our volunteer-powered team has been delivering professional, compassionate pre-hospital emergency care using two fully-equipped ambulances and a rapid-response vehicle.
Comprehensive Training Provided: We welcome individuals at all experience levels—EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, paramedics, nurses, and even non-medical volunteers like vehicle drivers and support staff. Training includes first aid, CPR, and EMT certification (tuition assistance available under contract).
Skill-Building & Career Foundations: Hands-on exposure to real emergency scenarios is invaluable, offering critical med-skill development and on-the-job learning opportunities .
Serve Your Community: Provide meaningful aid with each call—roughly 992 dispatches occurred in 2023 alone—making a real difference in neighbors’ lives .
On-Call Compensation & Perks: Volunteers receive a stipend of $1/hour when on call, plus call pay when activated. We also offer death & disability insurance, monthly training, voting rights in the LMVAS Volunteer Association, and access to community living quarters for out-of-town members.
Minimum On‑Call Hours: 36 hours per month.
Monthly Training: Second Sunday of the month at 5pm.
With around 35 active volunteers as of mid-2024, LMVAS fields thousands of service hours annually—valued at over $750,000/year based on Independent Sector estimates. In 2023 alone, LMVAS responded to 992 dispatches, including 696 transports, ensuring timely care and transport for our community.
